A Strange Political Disconnect

The US Capitol Against a Pink and Purple Morni...

I heard some interviews with Michael More about his new movie "Capitalism, A Love A Story", and although I have not seen it yet it got me thinking about how far out of wack our political debate is.

I am continuely struck by how both Democrats and Republicans seem to ignore some serious flaws in the practical applications of what each side claims is it's core ideals.

Charter Schools Should be Embraced by Conservatives

I find it interesting that a number of people seem to equate Charter Schools with lefty liberal movements. I am not sure why this is. I can think of at least three reasons why Charter Schools should be embraced by true conservatives.

1. Charter Schools are a key component of the School Choice movement, which has long been a key position of true conservatives.

2. Charter Schools are actually an example of "small government". They do away with an entire layer of administration, and are measurably more efficient because of it. To put it bluntly. They save money

Do We Really Need More Cars?

Oh boy it just keeps getting sillier. According to CNNMoney, congress is considering ways to get people to buy new cars. This is just another example of how broken our system is. If people truly needed cars they would buy cars. The fact is they don't. There is no demand. Years of cheap credit and 0 percent financing took car of that. The auto industry is a wasteful, dirty, industry. It needs a huge round of creative destruction, not federal subsidies to keep it limping along like it is.

2 Trillion More? Seriously?

Reuters is reporting that US banks are going to need another 2 Trillion in bailouts. This is absurd and criminal.

Drop "Pro Business"

I just heard that David Frum is launching a new website called "New Majority" next month. Like many conservatives, Mr Frum, is trying to help get conservatives back on track. In the interview with NPR, Mr Frum kept referring to the republican party as the "Pro Business" party. I suggest that an early step in reforming the republican party would be to drop "Pro Business" as part of its platform.

A Secretary of Food is Just Lipstick on a Pig

Nicholas D Kristof has an interesting column in the NY times about who Mr. Obama should pick as the Secretary of Agriculture. His first point is that he should change the name of the Department of Agriculture to the Department of Food. He thinks that this would "...signal that Mr. Obama seeks to move away from a bankrupt structure...".
